2008 Domestique
Ease into the slipstream with our Rhone-style 2008 Domestique. Leading with aromas of black currant and blackberry, earthy notes then join the team, followed by an enduring bright fruit finish.
Winemaker Notes
Domestique is a bicycle racing term for the member that gives up his/her
own race finishing status for the good of the team. This person leads the
pack, creating a wind break for other team members so they can conserve
energy during lengthy rides, a heroic demonstration of self sacrifice for a
greater good. So, why did we name our current wine club release
Domestique? Well, the story starts with what’s popularly called a “GSM” style
blend, which is made primarily from the Rhone variety grapes Grenache,
Syrah, and Mourvedre. Our 2008 Domestique is 45% Grenache, 26% Syrah,
26% Mourvedre, and 3% Sangiovese. These were all good wines, but one was
truly exceptional -- the 2008 vintage Mourvedre from the Teasdale Vineyard
in Temecula. This wine is the humble yet powerful workhorse that gave up its
Mourvedre varietal identity to elevate the blend from good to great – it truly is
the domestique!
